New Books - 05/06
Dear Ghosts, by Tess Gallagher (Graywolf Press $20) This marks the first full collection of new poems from Ms. Gallagher in 14 years. Intimate and autobiographical, the book is not only an address to her beloved ghosts, but a reckoning with her own mortality.
Why Did You Leave the Horse Alone? by Mahmoud Darwish (Archipelago Books $18) A beautifully designed, bilingual volume by perhaps the foremost contemporary Palestinian poet. It is at once personal and representative of a people -- "I am my dream. Whenever the earth narrows, I expand it with the wing of a swallow."
The Story, by Michael Ondaatje (Anansi $19.95) This hardcover book, with shadowy illustrations by the painter David Bolduc, tells a dreamy story within a story of exile and escape. The poem is reproduced in Mr. Ondaatje's hand, then the lines are printed above his tight scrawl. The production, like the story, is other-worldly. A project of World Literacy of Canada, the royalties from this book are used to promote literacy in India.
Patti Smith Complete 1975 - 2006, (Harper Perennial $25.95) A thick collection of lyrics, reflections, and "notes for the future" by the punk rock poet and singer. There are photographs of Ms. Smith as a child, as a performer, and photos of her children and her friends and influences, including William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and many others. Facsimiles of her typewritten work are here, too. Ms. Smith is a compelling and intense writer, and a wholly interesting American character.
