Blue Cloud Quarterly, the - set of 5 (also individually priced)
Five issues of The Blue Cloud Quarterly, a publication of the Benedictine Missionaries, Blue Cloud Abbey, Marvin, South Dakota. In the 1970's and 1980's Blue Cloud Quarterly was an important publisher of Native American literature. These five pamphlets are staple-bound and in Good+ condition, with some fading, slight foxing, and slight rust at the staples. These copies came from the collection of the late Don Olsen, publisher of Ox Head Press and other imprints. A description of each issue and its separate price follows. We will discount the price 20% if available copies are bought as a lot.

Volume XVII, #4 A Story From Charlie as told to Sister Susan Sister Susan Scheet, O.S.B., quotes the story of Charlie Cree who, as a child, survived what was perhaps the flu plague ("everybody who got this sickness died") thanks to the intercession of a healer. The book reproduces the Sister's "distinctive calligraphy" and its cover features representation of the Turtle Mountains. $18.50

Volume XIX, #1 Two Legends of the Sioux The legends are "The Beginning of our People," which starts, "Many, many seasons ago Wakantanka, the Breath Giver, the Holy One, walked in the trees of the Paha Sapa, the Black Hills. The trees were cool and the music of the streams made him happy." The second legend is "Sica Hollow," beginning, "There is a place that today is called Sica Hollow. It is deep and dark, and long memories live there." The credit states, "Two Legends of the Sioux were narrated by Wambi Wicasa and made available to us by the American Indian Culture Research Center of Blue Cloud Abbey." $16.50

Volume XIX, #3 Geronimo: If I Must Die in Bondage Poems from Laurence S. Fallis, a writer with Cree ancestry and translator of Indian myths and legends. According to Fallis his poems "[try] to tell the story from the point of view of the Apache and to cover those aspects of Geronimo's life that are ignored in the usual accounts and biographies." $18.50

Volume XX, #1 Northwest Coast Indian Songs "These versions are free adaptations by David Cloutier based on texts collected by various anthropologists cited in the notes following the songs." The illustrations in this issue "are traditional tattoo designs from John R. Swanton's THE HAIDA [1905]." $22.50

Volume XX, #4 A Memorial For Our Friends "Among the Dakota People there is the custom of holding a memorial on the first anniversary of a relative's death. Presents are given away in remembrance of the deceased. We would like you to receive this issue of the Blue Cloud Quarterly in memory and with respect for PAUL WAR CLOUD, Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Artist and community leader, who died at an early age a year ago in December. At the same time we want to honor VIOLA FARVER (WHITE WATER), an elderly Shawnee lady, who died in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania this past summer after a long life in which she dedicated her time and resources not only to Indian people but to all people regardless of race. May their goodness live after them." The writers in this issue are Bernice Ames, Peter Fiore, Katharine H. Allen, John Ridland, Billie Jean James, and Art Cuelho. The issue also includes two poems translated from the Aztec, and a transcription of a short speech by Choctaw Nation elder Chief Cobb replying to a request that remaining Choctaw follow those who'd taken the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. This copy is inscribed to Don and signed by Ridland on the first page of his poem. $18.50
