Poet Ellen Welcker & opera singer Madeline McNeill perform a stripped-down version of their multi-genre exploration of the mutability of borders, bodies, and boundaries real and imagined, based on Welcker’s poems of the same name. “The Pink Tablet Project” was a hybrid art project imagined by Ellen, Madeline, and artist Rebecca Chadwell, and performed live for two nights at Spokane’s Community Minded Television Studio in February, 2018.
Ellen Welcker is the author of Ram Hands (Scablands Books, 2016), The Botanical Garden (Astrophil Press, 2010) and several chapbooks, including The Pink Tablet(Fact Simile Editions, 2018). With Madeline McNeill, Rebecca Chadwell, and a whole slew of multi-disciplinary artists, she created The Pink Tablet Project: a Feral Opera, which performed to a standing room-only crowd for two nights in February, and is now being made into a film. She lives in Spokane, WA.
Madeline McNeill is a philosopher, an opera trained singer, writer, and composer. She created Body Philosophy, a new field of philosophy focusing on the core muscles–muscles of the torso, neck, and head–as the landscape for exploring philosophical questions. She investigates human experience by analyzing core muscle movement and sensation arriving at the conclusion that the self IS body. With this perspective, Madeline composed choral music for Ellen Welcker’s poetry, The Pink Tablet. Inspired by Ellen’s lyrics relating female experience to wolves and nature, Madeline combined traditional choral singing with postures of howls and cries to create a “feral opera.” She creates and composes many new works to share her ideas of Body Philosophy toward a spirituality of being a body. In 2018, she composed a “Sensata Liturgy on the Mind” with English and Latin lyrics set to medieval chant harmonies. In 2016, Madeline received an Artist Trust GAP grant to write an electronic opera, “I, Body.” In 2013, she published a book entitled “Is There a Soul?” Madeline lives in Spokane, Wa. She earned her BA in Music from Western Washington University.
