Rae Armantrout at Hugo House

April 3, 2015 @ 7:00 pm

rae-armantroutWe are delighted to join with Hugo House in presenting this reading by the ever-fascinating Rae Armantrout. This evening she’ll be reading from her latest collection, Itself ($24.95), just out from Wesleyan University Press. Chances are good she’ll also give us a tasty sneak-preview of a manuscript in progress, as she has been known to do. It’s always a pleasure to encounter her crisp work, which is briskly cogent, laced with humor, and often intensely, strangely beautiful. We offer here the book’s title poem —

“ITSELF”

I work it
until sweetness

rises
of itself,

then arcs across,
unfurling petals,

and is gone.

*

On television hundreds
of albino crabs
scuffle
over one steam vent.

*

I know you’re dreaming
things I haven’t dreamed,

wouldn’t. But that’s part
of your costume

like your extra
appendages.
