OPEN ELSEWHERE SERIES
with Gjertrud Schnackenberg

This evening marks the beginning of our Open Elsewhere Series, a chance for us to present an event in a larger but still poetry-friendly venue, in this case the Chapel Performance Space on the 4th floor of the Good Shepherd Center (two blocks north of Open Books) at 4649 Sunnyside (there are two parking lots near the front entrance and an elevator is available inside). We're delighted to be able to host Gjertrud Schnackenberg in this lovely room as she reads from her stunning new book, Heavenly Questions (FSG $23). Comprising six long poems, Heavenly Questions is a gorgeous and profoundly moving collection that deftly intertwines a narrative of personal grief with a meditation on the nature of existence itself, how all materializes and dematerializes, "But every crumb of matter in Creation / Casts a shadow...." Ms. Schnackenberg is a master of form and has written these poems in fluid, compelling blank verse. Image-rich and resonantly musical, their scope is both intimate and vast. A haunting, beautiful book.
