RENEE GLADMAN
To After That (Toaf) ($13.50 Atelos) is poet Renee Gladman’s latest, a complex, genre-mixing "report" on the experience of writing a novella. Her writing about the life around the writing of her unpublished "After That" is sharp, philosophical, comic, and surreal. Ms. Gladman’s tone instills trust even as she’s saying she’s not to be trusted -- "you can say anything about things that are not present." Wishing to ask the late author Nathalie Sarraute about the porous border between fiction and life, she writes, "I want to ask my dog Eva to come here, to try a piece of this pear I am eating, but she is deceased as well. Am I in fiction?"
