ZACHARY SCHOMBURG & DONNA STONECIPHER
Scary, No Scary ($12.95 Black Ocean), Zachary Schomburg’s latest book, is a dark marvel; a beautifully constructed journey into a matter-of-factly surreal, gorgeous, and nightmarish fairy-tale world. The writing is simple and vivid, as well as being quite grim and humorous. A person pushed into a black hole "looked like the second hand / of a clock / without a clock." Scary, No Scary is sustenance for the child in us who finds being scared intriguing.

Selected for the National Poetry Series, Donna Stonecipher’s The Cosmopolitan ($16 Coffee House) is a graceful, seemingly effortless immersion into the new world of social and national and interpersonal flux -- "In Kashmir we bought cashmere. Then, our suitcases stuffed, we flew back home to New York City, where we drank manhattan after manhattan." Stonecipher layers wry, declarative sentences like paint, creating a tender, sad portrait of our shrinking global village.
