PAUL E. NELSON
Over nearly 15 years, Paul Nelson researched, wrote, and lived his epic poem on the town of Auburn, Washington, once named Slaughter after an early military officer. The result is A Time Before Slaughter ($12.95 Apprentice House), an enlightening, feisty, loving representation of a place -- part history, part praise song, part cry for what has been lost. Written in both prose and tumbling, haiku-like poetry, the book invokes the eternal by evoking the passing specific -- "Slaughter is jet noise / what sends herons flapping / downstream above the Stuck."
