BRIAN TEARE
We’re pleased to welcome back to our podium San Francisco poet and teacher Brian Teare, this time to read from his recently published book, Sight Map ($16.95 University of California Press). Composed of three sections titled with longitude/latitude readings and one section called "Pilgrim," this visceral collection is a deeply sensual and rigorously meditative charting of the self in relation to place, to lover, and to the divine. Atmospheric, erotic, searching, the poems are grounded by vivid specificity and sent aloft through philosophical rumination -- "But it is all dear: / the thread that binds // recent greenery to background, / kisses tentative, pressing, each // to sustain a pattern, the sewn / woods wild // as backs of tapestries. / Watching the work of his pale skin // gather, gooseflesh / where my mouth just was: we are // as much as we see: the voice / full-throated with noticing; the mind // precise."
