ZACH SAVICH
In one of the two “Fool” poems included in Zach Savich’s first book, Full Catastrophe Living ($16 University of Iowa Press), zings the line “I am made of feelings / and toys,” and his book is indeed a shaking up -- and together -- of artifice and ache, of the theoretical and the messy, beautiful real. Sharp and unusual images rise throughout the poems -- “I would take you in / my arms, as one takes in / lawn furniture,” poems that are often varied explorations of love. Tender, wry, even cool, they give glimpses of the particular that is the shared -- “Is there / Anything less personal than love?” Gliding from the experimental to the formal, the pieces move with the energy that comes from the twining of mind and heart -- “Words to transmit the hum.”
