LORNA DEE CERVANTES
Ms. Cervantes is a cultural icon. In the words of Martin Espada, "[she] is not only an important Chicana poet; she is an important American poet." Ms. Cervantes's poetry is remarkable in its strength and variety of its aesthetics. Drive: New Poems 1980 - 2005 ($24.95 Wings) gathers five distinct books into one generous hardcover. The volume includes wonderfully mysterious lyrics -- "calling out the ghosts / of art, the many unawares" -- and powerfully direct social and political pieces -- "to some man / hope is a thing / with guns." Her work is humane, humorous, passionately angry and loving, and always literate. Ms. Cervantes will also be featured at LitFuse: A Poets' Workshop, in Tieton, Washington, Oct. 31 - Nov. 2 (visit www.mightytieton.com/litfuse2008.html).
