KAREN VOLKMAN
Ms. Volkman joins us to read from her third book, Nomina ($16 BOA), a collection of sonnets. Though each poem is a well wrought vessel, the substance within that familiar shape is mysterious, a metaphysical meditation that is both abstract and of the world. Sonically rich and laced with unusual phrasing, the poems are reminiscent of archaic riddles, their solutions perhaps as unsettling as their language is lush -- "Nothing was ever what it claimed to be, / the earth, blue egg, in its seeping shell / dispensing damage like a hollow hell / inchling weeping for a minor sea...."
