D. NURKSE
We're pleased to welcome D. Nurkse back to Open Books, this time
reading from his ninth book, The Border Kingdom ($26 Knopf). Mr. Nurkse's poetry packs a punch; an oddly clean, wry punch. His poems are grounded and yet they have a distinctly fairytale-like feel. Whether concerning
interpersonal relationships or life during war, or both, the scale of his
poetry is always very human. "This crusade, this carnage, / this rule of
strange weapons -- / the flinch, the sigh, the glance away -- / may be just
a faux pas between lovers // who lie naked, an inch apart, / in the stepwise
shadow of the blinds."
