ALAN CHONG LAU with SUSIE KOZAWA
It is always a delight to hear poet, painter, editor, and green grocer Alan Chong Lau perform in tandem with sound artist Susie Kozawa. Their collaborations are inevitably illuminating and charming. Ms. Kozawa’s instruments, many of the them homemade, are as varied and inventive as the world and its pieces, and she uses them skillfully to highlight and talk with Mr. Lau’s succinct, vivid poems. This evening also marks the launch of Mr. Lau’s chapbook no hurry, the latest volume from Cash Machine, the publishing arm of Open Books. The letter-set chapbook is limited to 150 copies, 26 of which have original art by the author ($8.50 and $45). The poems in no hurry draw on Mr. Lau’s numerous trips to Japan and are haiku-brief and refreshingly crisp. Rising out of acute attention, they beautifully reveal the transcendent in the everyday – “two old ladies / two oranges / sitting on the tree stump.” Humor and poignancy drift by like leaves on a stream.
