ROBERT WRIGLEY
Robert Wrigley returns to Open Books to mark the publication of Earthly
Meditations: New and Selected Poems ($20 Penguin), which draws from his six
previous collections and includes nineteen new pieces. Mr. Wrigley's poems
are indeed meditations of, on, and even for the earth and its animal and
human inhabitants. His is not a Disneyfied nature, witness his description
of the carcass of a buck -- "the good work of magpies and maggots / have
made this display, this sculpture, this door / the wind leans against and
one day will open." Sensual and deeply felt, his poems are richly rendered
contemplations of the natural world and the path we make through it,
conveying both reverence and irreverence with equal grace -- "I believe //
the afterlife is dirt, but sweet, and heaven's coming back / in the lewd,
bewhiskered tongue of an iris."
