RICHARD KENNEY & DAVID BIESPIEL
This evening's event is a reading and talk celebrating Long Journey: Contemporary Northwest Poets ($22.95 Oregon State) edited by Mr. Biespiel. Mr. Kenney, one of many local contributors to the anthology, will read those poems and, we expect, more. Mr. Biespiel will discuss his editing process. In the anthology's introduction he writes that "there is no such thing as regional poetry;" that the poet doesn't see "with a regional sensibility but with a poetic one." The book contains poems from seventy-one poets living in the Northwest United States and Canada. Mr. Biespiel took the unusual approach of requesting submissions of new work from regional poets with at least "one book of poems on a national press." The poems, in most cases, are either previously unpublished or published only in magazines. This allows readers the pleasure of finding new writing from such favorites as Olena Kalytiak Davis, Laura Jensen, and Mr. Biespiel's esteemed cohort this evening, Richard Kenney, a University of Washington professor, MacArthur Fellow, and author of three volumes of poetry.
