JOSEPH DONAHUE & PETER O'LEARY
A rare mid-summer reading at Open Books, but an opportunity we could not pass up. Poets, scholars, friends Donahue and O'Leary happen to be visiting Seattle at the same time and so will share their exhilarating, challenging, rewarding work with us this evening. Joseph Donahue is a much missed former member of Seattle's literary community, now teaching at Duke. He has for some time been at work on a beautiful and resonant poetic series called Terra Lucida, the latest sections of which were published as In This Paradise, ($7.50, Carolina Wren Press). His work, whether part of the series or outside it, is consistently thought-provoking and moving, a dismantling and reassembling of knowledge, hope, belief. Peter O'Leary's latest collection is Depth Theology, ($16.95, Univ. of Georgia), a phrase he defines as "religious knowledge of the unconscious." The recipient of a PhD from the Univ. of Chicago Divinity School, he has created poems that honor, probe, and transform the notion of the sacred, writing out of both historical and contemporary contexts with timeless results.
