MADELINE DEFREES & LUCIA PERILLO
Two award-winners read together. Ms. DeFrees's last book, Blue Dusk, garnered her the Lenore Marshall/The Nation Prize. Tonight she'll be reading from the just published Spectral Waves (Copper Canyon $16). In this new book her wit and incisive word choice are put to use on subjects as diverse as cataract surgery ("I wear an I.V. in my arm, tape across / my brow and ankles, terror in my solar plexus") and Elvis, the latter a sonnet sequence! Her poems are sprightly and bright, both wise and luminous. Earlier this year Ms. Perillo was given the Kingsley Tufts Award for a mid-career poet with exceptional talent. Her most recent book, Luck Is Luck (Random House $19.95), is a store favorite. Ms. Perillo's reading here last spring from that fine volume was a delight for all. This is sure to be a special and celebratory evening.
