KATE LYNN HIBBARD & JUDITH SKILLMAN
This afternoon we welcome two authors whose books have just been published by Silverfish Review Press of Eugene, Oregon. Ms. Hibbard received the press's Gerald Cable Book Award for her collection Sleeping Upside Down. The poems of this intimate and passionate volume present the particular pleasures and sorrows of a woman who loves women. Drawing their power out of the ordinariness of living, they praise both survival and delight. Ms. Skillman has published seven previous collections that are now joined by Heat Lightning: New and Selected Poems 1986-2006. Like fairytales or myths, her finely crafted lyrics often beguile and unsettle, though their domain is that of the housewife's suburbs. The domestic gives rise to the philosophical with poetic grace, not in search of comfort, but knowledge, a different kind of balm.
