THOMAS ASLIN
Sweet Smoke is the title of Thomas Aslin's chapbook, just published by Red Wing Press, a title that is particularly apt for these attentive poems that honor and mourn the transitory world. Their gentleness and care let what might be quiet, hidden, or difficult be heard, seen, and felt. Though their settings are the stuff of daily life -- an uncle fishing, a friend fixing an evening meal, an aging father raking leaves -- they evoke and address large topics -- death, love, and forgiveness. Where we find pain, these poems suggest, we may also find solace: "If the air, cooler now as it passes through / the window screens, is not a blessing then what is?"
