LEONARD SCHWARTZ & CATHERINE WAGNER
We're pleased to welcome two vital and unusual voices in the world of
contemporary poetry. The work in Leonard Schwartz's most recent collection
of poems, Ear and Ethos ($13.95 Talisman), is an affectionate challenge to
the lyric impulse in light of the violence and illogic of situations
throughout the Middle East. The tone of his poetry ranges from the
incantatory to the snap of a stand-up comic. Throughout, Mr. Schwartz's
emotional commitment and intellect are on view. Catherine Wagner's second
collection, Macular Hole ($12 Fence Books), is scratchy with energy,
brazen, coolly blazing, and dazzling with multifarious connections. Her
unsentimental take on motherhood is startlingly unlike other poetry on the
topic; then again, her take on anything is unlike anyone else's. Her poems,
with their different and compelling music, are pleasingly bracing.
