KATRINA ROBERTS
In 2001 the University of Washington Press inaugurated The Pacific Northwest Poetry Series, with Linda Bierds as its editor, and it has been our pleasure to help launch each of its yearly titles with a reading. Ms. Bierds' selection for 2005 is The Quick ($17.95 paperback, $30 hardcover), written by Katrina Roberts, who teaches at Whitman College in Walla Walla and is the author of the earlier collection How Late Desire Looks. Like the wings and waves that permeate this book, Ms. Roberts' poems convey the exhilaration and sadness of the eternal cycle of arrival and departure. "True, what's / lost is lost," she writes. "But often space left by loss / makes places available in the heart and day // for other makers of song to fill." At its heart this is a volume about the longing to have a child, the struggle to make that longing a reality, and the eventual glad welcoming of the "sweet slippery one."
