BRENDA HILLMAN
Ms. Hillman joins us to read from Pieces of Air in the Epic ($22.95
Wesleyan), the second volume in her planned tetralogy focusing on the
elements - earth, air, fire, and water. Imagery of winds, oxygen, and most
movingly, breath repeat in these timeless yet very much of their time
poems -- "Between church bells / I held its breath: / air coming from
half-states / it has visited where / dread meets ecstasy's skid-mark." She
deftly weaves the long-past with the current (Agamemnon's shield is evoked
in a mall; Dante's dark woods have been clear-cut; one poem is titled
"String Theory Sutra"). Her work, sometimes challenging in thought and form,
engages our challenging world. The result is invigorating and often
beautiful.
