PETER PEREIRA
Seattle poet and doctor Peter Pereira won the 2002 Hayden Carruth Award from
Copper Canyon Press, and Saying the World is the resulting book. Dr.
Pereira's practice of medicine informs most of the poems, with several
sweet, sad poems about his patients and how caring for them affects him.
Other poems draw on his childhood and the domestic life of a gay male moving
into middle age. His tone is compassionate, wistful, and peppered with
merciful humor.
